DOING OUR BIT
By REBEKAH DEVLIN
With the help of Monash University’s Associate Professor Dr Helen Bourke-Taylor, herself a registered occupational therapist, Source Kids gives speech, physiotherapy and OT students a chance to get hands-on experience at our expos.
Approximately 200 local university students volunteer to help families and children visiting the expos, engaging in games and activities with the kids, as well as chatting to the parents – giving them the opportunity to learn about the real life needs of our families.
It is a collaboration that has been going for three years, and it is our hope that these experiences will be etched into the minds of students as they approach the end of their degrees. Wouldn’t it be great to attract these budding professionals to working in the fields of disability and paediatrics?
So, with our Brisbane (July 30 and 31) and Perth (October 15 and 16) expos coming up, if you spot a volunteer therapy student, take a minute to say hello and chat. In doing so, you may be a part of the catalyst for change in improving the NDIS workforce for our children.
